We take great pleasure in Inviting you to a talk on the Making sense of India and China: some aspects of industrialization by Jhumur Lahiri On 3rd October, 2014 (4:30 pm) at Anveshi.
Abstract: The two most compelling and inter-connected realities before India today are (a) gnawing inequality in our society at different levels (b) growing compulsion to industrialize in an already globalized world.
Industrialization intrinsically is a highly skewed, ruthless process. Moreover, in today’s world the industrial production chain has become so completely globalized and the terms of wealth generation have so completely changed that there perhaps is no escape for India from engaging/participating in the global production process. But then the question remains how we should engage in this process, (a) without causing destitution to large sections of the people. (b) ensuring that gradually we move up the product value chain; that is, manage to enhance skills and engage in more complex/better paid production activities, freeing ourselves from low skill/low paid contract jobs or sheer unemployment. (c) Without surrendering the country’s economic sovereignty. Click Here for full abstract.

Very interesting topic. it is a double edged sword. We have to adapt to the globalization and work towards getting the opportunities to the masses. Let us call it Technology to Uplift the Downtrodden (TUD)
1. India has the opportunity to take the leadership in the world by making applications that can help bottom of the pyramid. It will help Indians and others in the world. We rant against the hegemony of the west and capitalism. When the possibility arises, why dont we take it and do it. Are we some bunch of constant complainers ? If any body wants to collaborate, please let me know.

2. Having a different outlook from the current education system which are producing graduates with out employable skills. Disrupting that and tying certificate course education to jobs has to be done. Why it needs to be 10th-inter-degree-PG and so on
3. Social entrepreneurship where social benefits and reach is the focus , rather than the profits. Building it to make it a sustainable.
4. Let us stop aping the west to build ubers/food apps/ fashion apps. Build apps that make a difference to billion people in India and in 3rd world countiries.
5. Ecosystem has to be there to support social ventures from small to medium to large. With out job creation / employment generation at mandal/town/B-city level, development wont come
6. Encouraging youngsters to go for small businesses/startups and to become entrepreneurs has to be done and propagate to rural areas
7. On manufacturing, we missed out the boat to china. Let us focus on service sector and internet based industries. Even on that china is way ahead of us in the size and scale of penetration and implementation
Let us work towards an equitable world where everybody gets an opportunity
